From the green hills just west of The District, Boxwood winery brings some amazingly welcoming crafted wines. You need these in your glass!
The nose is redolent of pronounced dark fruits, cherry, cardamom, toasty and lightly charred oak with a hint of vanilla. The palate is balanced and very well structured with generous fruit starting on the mid palate and following through to the end. There are essences of dark cherry and plum throughout with a touch of raspberry. The finish is lengthy with dusty lingering tannins complemented by bright fruit.
Cabernet Franc is one of the major black grape varieties worldwide. It is principally grown for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the Bordeaux style, but can also be vinified alone, as in the Loire's Chinon.
Merlot is a dark blue-colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Merlot grapes are identified by their loose bunches of large berries. The color has less of a blue/black hue than Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and with a thinner skin and fewer tannins per unit volume. Merlot grapes tend to have a higher sugar content and lower malic acid.
Since Bordeaux red blends are often quite structured and tannic, they pair best with hearty, flavorful and fatty meat dishes. Any type of steak makes for a classic pairing. Equally welcome with these wines would be beef brisket, pot roast, braised lamb or smoked duck.
